The Growing Futures Program is a practical, industry-led workforce development initiative created by Dorset Employment Connect to support young people in North- East Tasmania to explore and transition into rewarding careers.

The pilot program, Growing Futures in Hospitality, was delivered throughout Term 3 last year at the Dorset Trade Training Centre and was open to Year 10 students from both Scottsdale High School and Winnaleah District School.

The program aimed to:

  • Promote hospitality as a serious and rewarding profession, not just a casual job
  • Provide real-world exposure to hospitality workplaces
  • Build confidence, employability skills and career awareness
  • Create direct pathways into employment, training and further education
  • Support workforce needs in the local hospitality industry during peak season

Growing Futures is built on the principle that young people make better career decisions when they are given real experiences, real industry connections, and genuine insight into the world of work.

REAL-WORLD LEARNING EXPERIENCES, WORKPLACE VISITS & INDUSTRY EXPOSURE

Over the course of 10 weeks, the 10 participating students undertook hands-on training delivered by industry professionals, including Front of House service, Back of House Operations, knife handling skills, barista training and nationally-accredited units delivered by TasTAFE in RSA and Food Safety, alongside essential industry awareness and job readiness sessions.

The cohort went on a series of workplace visits to hospitality businesses across the region, including Bridport Cafe, St Mark’s Bridport, Bridport Bay Inn, The House Paddock, Barnbougle Dunes and Bridestowe Estate. This was a highlight of the program for each participant.

“My favourite part of the program was
the workplace visits. It was great to see
what the jobs actually look like and meet
people working in the industry.”

Outcomes to date from the Growing Futures Hospitality Program demonstrate strong progression across employment, education and training pathways. Eight out of the 10 participants have transitioned into paid work, accredited training, apprenticeships and further study, with several outcomes directly linked to employer engagement during the program. Importantly, the program has also supported increased confidence and career clarity, enabling young people to make informed decisions about their future pathways.
