Job Description
Dorset Council (Council) is seeking an experienced leader to join the team as Director – Development Services. This role is full-time and offers a base salary ranging from $145k to $165k, based on relevant skills and experience, along with the use of a Council vehicle and 13% superannuation.
In this pivotal role you will provide strategic vision, leadership, and expert guidance to ensure that both short-term and long-term plans are in place to accommodate the future growth of the Dorset municipality. You will lead a multi-disciplinary team that deliver critical services including strategic and statutory planning, building and plumbing services, environmental health, animal management and community services. In this role, you will:
- Lead, coach, motivate and empower a multi-disciplined team of personnel to ensure services are provided efficiently and effectively.
- Deliver service excellence across all facets of the Department with a high-level customer service approach.
- Ensure a positive, proactive stance in recognising and supporting development opportunities which deliver a benefit to the community.
- Ensure Council’s compliance functions are carried out in accordance with the relevant legislation, regulations and codes.
To be successful in this role you will have vast demonstrated experience in managing similar function areas. Local government experience or experience within a similar, large and complex organisation would assist your transition into this role. You will also have the skillset and drive to assist Dorset Council to deliver the initiatives contained in their Strategic and Annual plans. The following qualifications and skills are essential:
- A tertiary qualification in Planning or significant experience in an equivalent role.
- A proven track record in a successful leadership role within the planning discipline, with the capability to perform at a senior leadership level.
- Demonstrated experience in providing quality leadership to a multi-disciplinary team, with the ability to develop capability and foster a high morale and high performance culture.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of legislation for the planning, building, compliance and environmental health portfolios and their associated regulations (or ability to acquire).
- Understanding of and appreciation for community development principles.
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
