Job Description
Council is seeking an experienced leader to join the team as Director – Development Services. In this pivotal role, you will provide strategic vision, leadership, and expert guidance to ensure that both short-term and long-term plans are in place to accommodate the future growth of the Dorset municipality. You will lead a multi-disciplinary team that deliver critical services including:
- Strategic and Statutory Planning
- Building and Plumbing Services
- Environmental Health
- Animal Management
- Community Services
Reporting to the General Manager, you will be part of a high performing and cohesive executive management team who will trust in your ability to make decisions, to create an impact and to contribute to the collective success of the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, motivate and empower a multi-disciplined team of personnel to ensure services are provided efficiently and effectively.
- Deliver service excellence across all facets of the Department with a high-level customer service approach.
- Ensure a positive, proactive stance in recognising and supporting development opportunities which deliver a benefit to the community.
- Ensure Council’s compliance functions are carried out in accordance with the relevant legislation, regulations and code.
Qualifications and Experience
- A tertiary qualification in Planning would be highly regarded, however substantial experience in a similar or aligned role would also be considered.
- A proven track record in a successful leadership role within the planning discipline, with the capability to perform at a senior leadership level.
- Demonstrated experience in providing quality leadership to a multi-disciplinary team, with the aptitude to develop capability and foster a high morale and high-performance culture.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of legislation for the planning, building, compliance and environmental health portfolios and their associated regulations (or ability to acquire).
- Understanding of and appreciation for community development principles.
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
To be successful in this role you will have strong demonstrated experience in managing similar or aligned function areas. Experience in local government, or in a similarly large and complex organisation will support a smooth transition into the role. You will also have the skillset and drive to assist Council to deliver the initiatives contained in theirĀ Strategic and Annual plans.
