Reports To: Maintenance Manager

This apprenticeship provides a hands-on opportunity to develop skills in mechanical maintenance within a timber processing environment.

Working alongside the Maintenance Manager, the apprentice will support the setup, sharpening and maintenance of saws, while also gaining broader experience in machinery maintenance, fault finding and workshop practices across the mill.

This role is suited to someone with a strong interest in mechanical work, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to working safely in an industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

Saw Setup & Maintenance (Primary Focus)

  • Assist with the setup, alignment and adjustment of saws 
  • Support the sharpening and maintenance of saw blades 
  • Inspect saw condition and identify wear or defects 
  • Clean, maintain and store saw equipment correctly 
  • Assist in ensuring saws are operating safely and efficiently 

Machinery Maintenance & Repairs

  • Assist with preventative maintenance across all plant and equipment 
  • Support breakdown repairs and fault finding activities 
  • Clean and maintain machinery and workshop areas 
  • Assist in replacing parts and components as required 
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical issues under supervision 

Workshop & Maintenance Support

  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment 
  • Assist with tools, equipment and spare parts management 
  • Follow maintenance schedules and work instructions 
  • Record maintenance activities as required 

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) requirements 
  • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times 
  • Identify and report hazards, incidents and near misses 
  • Participate in safety training and toolbox meetings 

Learning & Development

  • Undertake and complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (or equivalent) 
  • Actively participate in on-the-job and formal training 
  • Seek feedback and continuously develop skills and knowledge 
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning and improvement

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Current driver’s licence (preferred or working towards) 
  • Completion of Year 10 (minimum) 
  • Interest in pursuing a mechanical or engineering trade 

Working Environment

This role is based in an operational timber processing facility and involves exposure to:

  • Industrial machinery and equipment 
  • Noise, dust and moving plant 
  • Workshop and production environments 

Strict adherence to safety procedures is essential at all times.
