Job Description

North Eastern Advertiser | Full-Time or Part-Time | North East Tasmania

Opportunities like this don’t come along every day.

The North Eastern Advertiser is looking for a motivated, reliable and community-minded person to join the team as a Journalist.

This role could suit an experienced journalist looking for their next opportunity, or someone at the beginning of their career who has a genuine interest in media, writing, people and the stories that shape our local communities.

You’ll work across North East Tasmania, covering everything from council and court news to local sport, community events, businesses, local achievements and the everyday stories that matter to the people who live here.

About the role

This position is available on either a full-time or part-time basis, with an immediate start available.

Your work will include:

  • Researching, interviewing and writing local news stories
  • Covering council meetings, courts and community issues
  • Reporting on local sport, events and activities
  • Meeting and talking with people across the community
  • Building relationships with local businesses, organisations, clubs and community groups
  • Finding the stories that deserve to be told
  • Travelling throughout Northeast Tasmania
  • Occasional weekend work when required

Who we’re looking for

You don’t necessarily need to have worked as a journalist before.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable, trustworthy and professional
  • A great communicator who is comfortable talking with people from all walks of life
  • Curious and interested in what is happening around them
  • Confident asking questions and listening to people’s stories
  • Able to work independently and manage deadlines
  • Willing to learn and build their skills
  • Genuinely interested in local communities and regional life

Previous journalism or media experience would be highly regarded; however, it is not essential.

For the right candidate, the employer is also open to conversations around a traineeship in media or another suitable training pathway, providing an opportunity to learn on the job while developing recognised skills and industry experience.

Training, mentoring and support will be provided.

Essential – a current driver’s licence is required, as travelling throughout the region is an important part of the role.

If you’ve ever thought about a career in journalism or media but haven’t known how to get your foot in the door, this may be the opportunity.

Roles like this in regional media don’t come up often.

If you enjoy meeting people, love hearing a good story and want a job where no two days are quite the same, we’d love to hear from you.

TO APPLY: Contact us at admin@dorsetec.org.au and we can assist with your application. This role can be full-time or part-time, and immediate start available.
